Handspring has again lowered the price of the Visor Phone (springboard module). Now it's free. Check it out, here.
This is a note I just got from a Cingular customer in MO. Check it out...It's good news It looks like Cingular fixed the problem in Springfield, MO at least... I have been unable to get online the last couple of days using the browser in my phone. I was getting the error message, "Connection Timed Out" on my phone. This morning I was finally able to get online and I thought, "I wonder if they fixed the Palm issue" AND THEY DID! It looks like Cingular IS a company that resonds to their customers... Now, if they'd only deploy the fix nationwide...

Palm's coming out with a new low end device, soon - the m125. It's supposed to replace the m100 and m105 and include the new universal connector, and an SD slot like the m505 and m500 have. It's planned to run about $250. I saw this story on MSNBC - you can check it out, here.
Last I heard, someone on the Cingular network said they were actually able to connect to their Palm via IR...then later, they weren't able again. When asked what's going on, Cingular told them they're testing a fix and assessing its impact on their network. I'll let you know if I hear more. Lately, nothing new has come up, and Cingular isn't talking much.
TekReview.com is not dead - although it probably looks that way. I've had evey setback imaginable to getting the new site up. The latest was when my router failed, preventing me from getting at my data. I'm in the home stretch doing data migration and final testing now. It'll be any day now.
The new version of TekReview.com will be online any day now. It seems like I've been saying that for a while - any programmer that tells you it's almost done should know better. Yet, I said it, and I thought I DID know better. Anyway, the new site will be better lookin', and allow me to concentrate on reviews, not site administration. Hang in there. NOKIA 7160 ISSUE Regarding the Nokia issue - I haven't got any updates. It seems that the info stream has quieted and I'm sort of waiting around for something to happen. Anyone have any new info to post???
Without resorting to job titles, I have this update to offer - a higher up within the Cingular organization spoke with one of my sources and said in a noncommital way, that they would like to implement the S7 register fix across the whole Cingular network. Let's hope it happens. I'll keep you posted. Sorry for the sketchy details on this one - I was asked not to print the person's name from Cingular.
Happy fourth of July to all the U.S. based TekReview.com readers. Hopefully, it will be a restful one.
PalmGear finally gets to put to rest its legal (and as a result, financial) woes as it was just announced that it's 2+ year lawsuit has been settled. In 1998, Q Ventures filed suit against PalmGear - and today, it was announced that they lost. Congratulations Kenny West! Check out the whole press release here.
The speed wars continue - Today, Intel released the Pentium 4 1.8GHz, priced at $562 in 1,000 unit quantities to distributors. AMD is still the performance king in a dollar for dollar comparison, but, if it's raw clock speed you want to brag about, AMD only runs at 1.4Ghz today (FYI, I run a 1.33GHz AMD Athlon and I love it).
I was planning to deploy the new TekReview.com this weekend, and my new host had a hardware failure which brought the whole thing crashing down (Not a good sign). The new site is STILL not back up. As soon as it's back, and stable, I'll let you know.
Symantec announced AntiVirus for PalmOS. Where will it end. Now, things are to the point where I need to sap CPU cycles on my Palm to keep out viruses. I've personally never seen a Virus for the Palm, but, if you're worried, here's your solution. Check it out, here.
TekReview.com's site upgrade is almost done. Being that there's one programmer at the moment (me), it's slow going - we're almost there. The upgrade will improve our look, and facilitate our new writers to put in their articles, too. All in all, you win! Stay tuned.
Check out the specials on PC2100 256MB CAS2 Memory at J&N - $69!!!! I don't get any endorsment from them for saying this, either...it's just so low. Incidentally, my main system runs on that same memory which I bought for twice that price (which was still cheap). Some days, I just hate how prices drop...and others...I just love it. I guess since I already have my memory, I hate it. Such is life.
Besides TekReview, I'm also a musician. I came across a really nice sounding vintage tube amp. It turns out to be a 1960s Stewart Tube guitar amp. I looked all over and couldn't find any info. I found one other person via the internet that had a Stewart amp. We're both clueless about the technical details, schematics, etc, so we formed the SS Stewart Tube Amp Users Group. Check it out, here, if you want to see them, or, if you have any info for us.
I got this email from someone else investigating this problem. Looks like he's made some good progress. Here's what he wrote: Hi - It looks like my efforts in pushing to get the Cingular/Nokia/Palm problem resolved may soon pay off. I just got this email from the head troubleshooter from Cingular in my area, whom I have kept posted on this issue from the start. I'll send a follow-up when they let me know the resolution has been implemented: ####################################### Hello, Well, I received a memo this morning regarding the problem we discussed. It seems we finally have a fix out that will be implemented in our switching system possible next week. It depends on workload and various other projects we have in progress. I will keep you updated on the process and date of implementation. Following is a copy of the memo: Description: In a Mobile originated TDMA data call, and "ERROR" is returned if the laptop application attempts to set the S7 register in the modem to value greater than 50 (e.g., ATS7=90.) Resolution: The IWFPE is modified to accept the requests to set the S7 register value from 1 to 255. As you see this will allow the S7=90 to work properly. Thank you for your interest in this problem. I thank you again for bringing it to my attention. Most people just live with a problem and sometimes the companies involved just need a question put to them to generate interest and concern to rectify the issue..I'm elated that this is resolved for all our customer utilizing the Palm style computers. We want our customers to utilize our network for voice and data. It is what our customers want and need in the new millennium. Thank you again. (name witheld) Cingular Wireless Data I jumped up, and almost hit the ceiling when I read this. I'm hoping everyone's problem is due to connection with Cingular. If other carriers are the cause of the same problem, they need to be contacted as I have done to get the problem resolved. Now, let's see if this info does us in other parts any good. If your carrier wil comply, you may have your answer!
Thompson (i.e., RCA) has the first MP3Pro player/encoder on the street for evaluation. It uses the Frauhofer Institue's new psychoacoustic encoding techniques for files that are 1/2 the size of current MP3 files, with even higher quality. Get it here. |
